PROVIDENCE – Providence is one of 10 cities selected to participate in Envision America 2017’s Smart City initiative to tackle energy, water, waste and air challenges.

Providence, along with Jackson, Miss.; San Antonio; Wichita, Kan.; Burlington, Vt.; Detroit; Chula Vista, Calif.; Greensboro, N.C.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Long Beach, Calif., will participate in a March 6-8 workshop in Charlotte, N.C., through the initiative.

A spokeswoman for the city of Providence could not be immediately reached for comment about the initiative.

According to Envision America, which is a program under Envision Charlotte, cities were selected to participate based on their goals, existing cross-sector collaborations, and a commitment to developing innovative approaches foundational to a Smart City. Over the course of the three-day workshop, representatives will collaborate with industry, academic experts and entrepreneurs to develop innovative strategies to help implement “smart” projects in their city, according to a recent press release about the initiative.

Envision Charlotte will co-host Envision America with the Data Science Initiative at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Envision Charlotte, created in 2010, was a public-private collaboration to make commercial buildings in Charlotte’s urban core more energy efficient.

Launched last year, Envision America is building on the success of its inaugural workshop, which featured representatives of 10 cities, including New York City and Cambridge, Mass.
Envision America is supported by AT&T, Bank of America, IBM, Itron, Microsoft, Philips Lighting, PTC SAS, Siemens and Wells Fargo.
