NEW YORK – Providence beat out New York City, to be named the second best city for pizza in the United States by Travel + Leisure Magazine.

Surpassed by only Chicago and its iconic deep dish pizza, Providence held onto its second place spot on the 2013 list thanks to grilled pizza, a Providence-only offering in which dough is cooked on one side and then flipped before toppings are added.

The tourism magazine also noted the pizza strips for those who wished to “go a layer deeper into the city’s pizza culture.” Pizza from Bacaro Restaurant at 262 South Water St. and LaSalle Bakery were both commended on the list.

The rest of the top 10 list were as follows: New York City (No. 3), Philadelphia (No. 4), Boston (No. 5), Minneapolis–St. Paul (No. 6), San Diego (No. 7), Savannah, Ga. (No. 8), Nashville (No. 9) and Kansas City, Mo. (No. 10).
