Public will pick R.I. token for Monopoly game

PROVIDENCE – Hasbro Inc. will create 5,000 limited-edition Rhode Island Monopoly games this winter, and proceeds from the games will benefit Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
The creation of the games coincides with the hospital’s 20th anniversary celebration on March 8, 2014. The Monopoly game spaces and pieces will reflect Rhode Island locations, companies, organizations and landmarks.
Hasbro and the hospital are asking the public to pick the sixth game token, which will depict a Rhode Island icon. While other states have limited-edition Monopoly games of their own, Rhode Island is the first state where the public is invited to select a game piece.
The options for the tokens are The Breakers Newport, Newport Bridge, Rhode Island Statehouse, the so-called “Superman Building,” WaterFire Providence, Towers Narragansett, Haven Brothers Diner, Hope Seal, The Independent Man, Quahog, Mr. Potato Head, Sailboat, Roger Williams and the Block Island Lighthouse.
The 14 contenders were chosen through an internal Hasbro Inc. and Hasbro Children’s Hospital poll. Voting is open online at https://giving.lifespan.org/RI_Monopoly_Token and continues through Sept. 30. •
