Pulitzer Prize Board awards $45,739 to R.I. Council for the Humanities

PROVIDENCE – The Pulitzer Prize Board has awarded $45,739 to the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities for a program called “What is the 21st Century Essay?”
The series of programs commemorates the 100th anniversary of the prizes in 2016 through Pulitzer’s Campfires Initiative by exploring the changing nature of journalism and the humanities in the digital age. Programming will focus on environmental issues and their urgency and relevance to health, communities and economy.
The Humanities Council will collaborate with several partners to produce this series, which will include performances, conferences, multimedia interpretations and publications.
“In Rhode Island, we wanted to take a forward-looking approach to why the disciplines represented by the Pulitzer Prizes matter so much. As the media landscape changes, we need the depth, persistence and creativity of the humanities to shed light on the complex challenges we face,” stated Elizabeth Francis, executive director for the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.
The experiences created through programming “will at the very least deepen and perhaps even change our understanding of the environment,” she added.
Some of this year’s programming with include a podcast series throughout the spring featuring interviews with program participants and, on March 18, a one-day conference exploring approaches to long-form, humanities-rich journalism. The conference will take place at the University of Rhode Island’s downtown Providence campus.
There is also programming slated in June at the Ocean State Writers Conference at URI and in the fall through Story in the Public Square, the Providence Athenaeum and other venues.
