Pump prices continue to slide in R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices in the Ocean State fell 2 cents this week in the eighth consecutive week of price declines, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.
The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.51 per gallon in the Ocean State – down 2 cents from last week and 23 cents over the month – according to the trade group’s weekly survey of Rhode Island’s pump prices.
Rhode Island’s price is currently equal to the $3.51 national average for a gallon of self-pump, regular unleaded.
AAA recommended drivers shop around for the best deal, as prices ranged 30 cents from $3.40 to $3.70 for a gallon of unleaded regular in Rhode Island.
This week, pump prices varied from $3.74 per gallon for midgrade to $3.87 for premium unleaded and $3.96 for diesel.
A year ago, gas in the Ocean State cost 42 cents more at an average $3.93 for a gallon of regular unleaded.
Gas prices in Massachusetts fell 2 cents this week to $3.43 per gallon, 8 cents below the national average, according to AAA. Massachusetts’ gas prices have dropped 17 cents over the past month.
Bay State gas prices ranged from $3.65 per gallon for midgrade unleaded to $3.78 for premium and $3.94 for diesel.
A year ago, the Massachusetts average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.83.
The average nationwide cost for self-serve, regular gasoline dropped 1 cents this week to $3.51 a gallon, according to the AAA website. Pump prices reached their highest recorded average price on July 17, 2008, at $4.11 per gallon.
