Pump prices remain stagnant in R.I., drop in Mass.

GAS PRICES WERE UNCHANGED in both Rhode Island and the U.S. this week as prices dropped a penny in Massachusetts, according to AAA Southern New England's weekly survey of pump prices.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s gas prices were unchanged this week after three consecutive weeks of price increases, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.

The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.60 per gallon in Rhode Island – unchanged from last week, but up 10 cents over the course of the month, according to the trade group’s weekly survey of the area’s pump prices.

Despite the increase, Rhode Island’s price is currently 3 cents less than the $3.63 national average for a gallon of self-pump, regular unleaded.

AAA recommended drivers shop around for the best deal, as prices ranged 35 cents from $3.46 to $3.81 for a gallon of unleaded regular in Rhode Island.

This week, pump prices varied from $3.82 per gallon for midgrade to $3.93 for premium unleaded and $3.94 for diesel.

A year ago, gas in the Ocean State cost 13 cents more at an average $3.73 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

As Rhode Island’s gas prices remained stagnant, the pump price in Massachusetts also dropped 1 cent this week to $3.51 per gallon

The Bay State gas prices are currently 12 cents below the national average, according to AAA. Massachusetts’ gas prices are up 8 cents over the past month.

Bay State gas prices ranged from $3.71 per gallon for midgrade unleaded to $3.84 for premium and $3.90 for diesel.

A year ago, the Massachusetts average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.57.

The average nationwide cost for self-serve, regular gasoline was unchanged this week at $3.63 a gallon, according to the AAA website. Pump prices reached their highest recorded average price on July 17, 2008, at $4.11 per gallon.
