RE/MAX agent raises $25K for Hasbro Children’s Hospital

COVENTRY – A block party organized by real estate agent Mark DeCosta of RE/MAX Central has raised $25,000 for Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where his daughter has received treatment.
“We are extremely grateful to the DeCosta family, their friends and colleagues,” said Margaret M. Van Bree, president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “Support from the community is critically important to our work and this wonderfully generous gift will have an impact on many young lives.”
Over four years, DeCosta has raised nearly $50,000 for the hospital.
Most recently, more than 1,000 community members and volunteers comprising friends, family, RE/MAX agents and hospital representatives came together for the block party. DeCosta’s daughter, Rachel, 9, was treated as an infant at the hospital and again recently.
“When Rachel was 6 years old, she asked if we could do something to say thank you to the doctors at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and to help the kids being treated there,” DeCosta recalled. “We started off with a simple bake sale fundraiser that has evolved into an incredible annual event.”
DeCosta, his family and volunteers presented the check of $25,000 to Hasbro Children’s Hospital leadership on Nov. 2. The money raised will be used to support pediatric oncology and gastroenterology. In 2016, the goal is to raise $50,000.
Added Dr. Phyllis A. Dennery, hospital pediatrician-in-chief and medical director: “That this effort was inspired by one of our young patients who wanted to give back underscores the special ways our caregivers connect with families in our care. It’s very touching.”
