PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranks fourth in national commercial vehicle safety and enforcement, according to a study released by American Transportation Research Institute this month.
The study, “Evaluating the Impact of Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Disparities on Carrier Safety Performance,” compared and contrasted the commercial motor vehicle enforcement and safety performance of 48 states across several dozen variables. Categories examined included: fatal crashes, roadside inspections, violations, traffic-enforcement stops, red-flag violations, crash-predictor violations and state funds expended per federal motor-carrier safety-assistance funds.
Maryland topped the list, followed by Washington state and Nevada. Montana, Connecticut, New Mexico, California, South Dakota and Iowa rounded out the top 10. •
