R.I. Biz Plan to launch 2013 competition on Oct. 17

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition will launch its 2013 competition on Oct. 17 with an educational event intended to teach people about launching a business.

The kick-off event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at Johnson & Wales University’s Harborside Academic Center in Providence. All business plan competition events are free and open to the public, but the kick-off event requires pre-registration at www.ri-bizplan.com.

Winners and finalists from the 2012 competition took home prizes valued at more than $200,000. Last year’s winners – Siren Marine Inc., JumpOffCampus and Overhead.fm – will speak at the October kick-off event.

The free competition is open to everyone regardless of whether or not they have previously started a business and is organized along two tracks. The competition’s entrepreneur track is for anyone 18 and older, and the student track is for students currently enrolled in college or graduate school.

“The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition is all about helping entrepreneurs build the next generation of companies in Rhode Island, and we’re looking forward to another strong year,” competition Co-Chair Margaret “Peggy” Farrell, a partner at Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP, said in a statement.

The competition is intended to culminate in May with the awarding of prizes to winners and finalists.
