WARWICK – Rhode Island Family Shelter will receive $35,000 in unrestricted funding as a 2014 Champion in Action for its work in strengthening communities through family support.

Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC 10 today said the shelter also will receive media coverage, promotional and volunteer support for its work.

The shelter’s mission is to keep homeless families in the state together through temporary shelter or affordable housing. The organization also provides case management services, savings programs, and family housing.

The Champions in Action program is part of Citizens Helping Citizens Strengthen Communities, which is designed to enhance quality of life and economic vitality in local communities.

The $35,000 contribution will be used to support Rhode Island Family Shelter’s efforts to provide housing and supportive services to homeless families in Rhode Island, bank and television station said representatives said.

“The Rhode Island Family Shelter is thrilled to receive this award, which will help us continue to provide a home for families to come together in and regain their livelihood,” Patti Macreading , the shelter’s executive director. “We are very thankful to Citizens and NBC 10 for their generous support of our programs.”

Barbara Cottam, executive vice president and Rhode Island market executive for Citizens Bank, and Vic Vetters, vice president and general manager of NBC 10, said the shelter’s impact on the community deserves to be recognized and supported.

“The shelter does so much to assist the Rhode Island community by taking care of some of its neediest members, and we couldn’t be happier to support their efforts,” said Vetters.

The Champions in Action program has awarded more than $1.1 million in grants and promotional support to 43 nonprofits in Rhode Island.
