R.I. Foundation awards $28K in grants to increase access to information

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation has awarded 15 nonprofit organizations more than $28,000 in grants to increase access to information.
The grant awards cover everything from documenting the contributions of African Americans to the state’s history to digitizing material that details shifts in education for girls. The awards were made through the foundation’s Archive, Document, Display and Disseminate Fund.
“By offering the resources to strengthen libraries and other civic, cultural and literacy-focused organizations, we can expand their role as community centers that stimulate dialogue around critical issues,” said philanthropist Herman Rose, who created the ADDD fund in 1986. Over the years, it has awarded more than $372,000 in grants.
The goal is to boost access to information through archiving, documenting, displaying or disseminating print, digital or other material, and to provide challenge grants for fundraising campaigns for the acquisition of equipment, special collections and publications among other material.
Four organizations received the largest grants, $2,800 each: the Burrillville Land Trust, GEAR Productions of Wakefield, Providence CityArts for Youth and the Southside Community Land Trust in Providence. Eleven organizations received smaller amounts or equipment.
