R.I. Foundation gives Red Cross $5,500

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation has awarded the American Red Cross $5,500 in grants through its Fund for Rhode Island and the Bob and Wini Galkin Fund to support the provision of emergency food and clothing assistance for disaster relief in Rhode Island.
Paula Montgomery, American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter executive director, said the grant would provide meaningful support for Rhode Islanders affected by disaster. He pointed out that American Red Cross disaster relief is funded entirely by donations and not by government funds.
“When you’ve lost everything because of a fire or other disaster that forces you from your home, getting help with the basics is the first step to recovery,” Montgomery said. “This gift will support a vital community service and support the work of Red Cross volunteers who step forward to help neighbors in need.”
Montgomery thanked the Rhode Island Foundation for its support of American Red Cross disaster relief. The Red Cross responds to an average of 200 fires each year in Rhode Island, he added, noting that the grant would have “immediate impact on the lives of people affected by disasters.”
“Every grant we make underscores our commitment to moving Rhode Island forward. We work closely with our donors and grantees to ensure there are the resources and the resourcefulness to achieve great impact,” said Neil Steinberg, the Foundation’s president and CEO, in awarding the grant.
