PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island veterans’ health care got a boost with the Rhode Island Quality Institute’s announcement Tuesday of a new $60,000 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation to support the institute’s health care coordination efforts.

The money will go toward veterans served by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Middletown Community Based Outpatient Clinic. It will fund the institute’s new initiative to incorporate 18,000 veterans into Rhode Island’s CurrentCare system – an electronic network that offers patient information to health care providers in order to establish better standards of care.

The new initiative will also seek to enroll care providers at the two affiliated medical centers in CurrentCare’s emergency electronic alert systems, as well as bolster collaboration among providers to reduce service redundancies or inefficiencies.

Though roughly one-third of Rhode Islanders are already signed up for CurrentCare, increased veteran enrollment will allow their doctors to access health records and other medical information from providers throughout the state, leading to “improved care coordination,” Deborah A. Clickner, acting Veterans Affairs Medical Center director, said in a statement.

“Giving the Providence VA Medical Center access to CurrentCare will provide VA doctors more information about their patients, helping reduce the risk of medical errors and improving the quality of care,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, founder of the Rhode Island Quality Institute while he was the state’s attorney general, said in prepared remarks.
