PROVIDENCE – April 30 is the deadline for nonprofit organizations to apply for $2 million in grants from the Rhode Island Foundation through its Fund for a Healthy Rhode Island.

“Quality, affordable primary care is one of our priorities. Our goal is to test models that have the potential to be widely adopted. By encouraging new, creative thinking around delivery and administration, we will ensure Rhode Islanders will continue to have access to the health care they need,” Yvette Mendez, who oversees grants in the health sector at the Rhode Island Foundation, said in a statement.

Grants are expected to range from $50,000 to $250,000 per year for up to three years. Applicants must have expertise in health care payment and delivery system reform or be knowledgeable about the issues facing safety-net providers, as well as have demonstrated organizational capacity, including financial infrastructure and staff.

Applications will be scored on several factors, including the ability to foster partnerships among public and private payers, health care providers and practitioners that are working on payment and delivery reform initiatives; the creativity and logic behind the proposal; experience managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously; and commitment to developing evaluation and data capacity.

The Fund for a Healthy Rhode Island was established as part of a settlement between Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island.

Since 2009, it has awarded $3.4 million in grants and $1.2 million in education loan repayments for primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
