RI Foundation supports Genesis Center job training/preparation program

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation has awarded the Genesis Center a $47,265 grant to expand services that prepare low-income Rhode Islanders for the workforce.
The center is using a three-part strategy: aligning its programs with the needs of the community, improving employment outcomes, and engaging unemployed and under-employed adults in job training or continued education.
The work includes implementing a distance-learning program, offering an e-Learning Lab, and bringing on a job developer to maintain, expand and develop new workforce partnerships and programs.
“This generous grant will expand employment counseling services and establish a hybrid e-learning resource for unemployed and underemployed adult learners,” said Shannon Carroll, president and CEO of the center. “This will serve as the first rung onto a career ladder for Rhode Islanders who need to increase their foundational skills for future success.”
Participants in job training programs will have access to electronic learning resources so that they can develop their literacy and math skills to meet employer needs, especially in Rhode Island’s growing health care industry, she said.
Founded 33 years ago in Providence’s West End, the center offers adult education, job training, and childcare services for low-income Rhode Islanders who want to make a better life for themselves and their families. Today, it serves more than 800 adults and children every year from more than 35 countries.
“Every grant we make underscores our commitment to moving Rhode Island forward. We work closely with our donors and grantees to ensure there are the resources and the resourcefulness to achieve great impact,” said Neil D. Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO.
