R.I. HUD-assisted families with children eligible for low-cost Internet

WEST WARWICK – Cox Communications recently announced that it is extending its Connect2Compete low-cost Internet to any U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-assisted household with school-age children within its 18-state service area.
That area includes Rhode Island, the company said.

Cox said it supports HUD’s ConnectHome initiative, which strives to ensure that students can access the same level of high-speed Internet at home that they have in their classrooms.
Cox said Internet connectivity has become essential to American life, as it allows access to school assignments, remote tutoring and job applications.
By expanding its Connect2Compete initiative, nearly 250,000 students across the nation in HUD-assisted homes, including “tens of thousands” in Rhode Island, have the potential to be impacted, Cox said.
The company said nearly two-thirds of the country’s lowest-income households own a computer, but less than half have a home Internet subscription.
“Technology and the Internet play an increasingly critical role in the education of our youth. Yet, students cannot take the Internet home in their backpacks,” Cox President Pat Esser said in a statement. “We are committed to staying at the forefront of the Internet adoption movement. Through strong partnerships in the communities we serve, we will build more bridges to enable all families to cross the digital divide, regardless of where they live.”
Said HUD Secretary Julián Castro, “ConnectHome is expanding opportunities for our nation’s next generation of inventors, CEOs and artists.”
Cox said it has led the industry by voluntarily offering affordable Internet service to low-income families with school-aged children.
Cox’s Connect2Compete service is $9.95 per month for eligible families, and includes downloads speeds up to 10 Mbps, free in-home WiFi, free installation and free access to hundreds of thousands of WiFi hotspots in markets across the country through Cox WiFi and Cable WiFi.
