PROVIDENCE – Gas prices dropped a penny in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this week, but Rhode Island’s average remained greater than national gasoline prices, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.
A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.70 in Rhode Island in the May 19 survey, a decline of 1 cent from the price a week ago. Similarly, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular fell 1 cent compared with last week to $3.66 per gallon.
Rhode Island and Massachusetts’ respective average prices both came in 5 cents higher than the averages in those states a month ago. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.57 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.49 per gallon in Massachusetts.
Self-serve, unleaded regular varied in price from $3.64 to $3.79 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.88 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.99 for premium unleaded to $4.03 for diesel.
Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price across Massachusetts from $3.55 to $3.80 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.85 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.97 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $4.07 per gallon.
The national average price for a gallon of unleaded regular remained unchanged this week at $3.65, 1 cent lower than the Massachusetts average and 4 cents lower than Rhode Island’s average.
