R.I., Mass. gas prices drop to lowest point since mid-April

PROVIDENCE – Gasoline prices declined 4 cents in Rhode Island and 2 cents in Massachusetts this week, the third consecutive week of lower prices in both states, according to the weekly survey by AAA Southern New England.

A gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gas in Rhode Island averaged $3.61 in the Aug. 4 survey, 4 cents lower than the price a week ago. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the average price for self-serve, unleaded regular dropped 2 cents to $3.57 per gallon.

Prices in both states are at their lowest levels since mid-April, AAA said.

In Rhode Island, the average price this week was 14 cents lower than the average a month ago, while in Massachusetts, prices were 11 cents lower than last month. A year ago, the same gas cost $3.77 per gallon in Rhode Island and $3.69 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Self-serve, unleaded regular ranged in price from $3.47 to $3.87 across the Ocean State in the survey. The average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.85 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.95 for both premium unleaded and $3.96 for diesel.

The price range for self-serve, unleaded regular in Massachusetts went from $3.38 to $3.90 per gallon. Mid-grade unleaded averaged $3.74 this week, while premium unleaded cost an average of $3.87 per gallon, and diesel posted an average price of $3.92 per gallon.

The national average price for unleaded regular dropped 2 cents this week to $3.50 per gallon, 11 cents less than the Rhode Island average and 7 cents less than the average in Massachusetts.
