PROVIDENCE – The R.I. State Council on the Arts has awarded $765,531 to 131 different artists, schools and nonprofits for everything from operating support to funding community-based projects.
Randall Rosenbaum, the agency’s executive director, said the council received 317 applications with requests for more than $1.8 million from artists, nonprofits and schools across the state.
The largest grant, $90,140, will support operations at Trinity Repertory Company, while the smallest, at $500 each, have been awarded to a variety of small community-based projects, he said.
“These grants do more than provide exciting cultural experiences in communities throughout our state,” said Gov. Gina M. Raimondo. “They support job growth, spark innovation and provide quality educational experiences to all Rhode Islanders.”
One example of a project supported in the current round of grants includes a $4,000 grant to Davisville Middle School in North Kingstown, where 90 seventh-grade students will enhance their understanding of Asian and African cultures through dance, drama, drumming and design.
One Neighborhood Builders (formally known as the Olneyville Housing Corporation) will receive $1,250 to support the 2015 Olneyville Fall Festival, while Eric Larson Gunness of Barrington is getting $1,500 to support the fifth annual “Fiddle ’n’ Folk Fest,” a free outdoor concert that will take place at Haines Park in Barrington on Sept. 12.
