The undeclared theme of this year’s program was health care, with three of the top prizes going to individuals or organizations engaged in helping deliver heath care services to the state. Recognized for Business Leadership was Lifespan President and CEO Dr. Timothy J. Babineau, while the award for Corporate Citizenship was given to former Women & Infants CEO and current executive vice president of women’s health for Care New England Constance Howes. Rhode Island Free Clinic was recognized for Excellence at a Nonprofit Social Service Agency.

Attendees at the event gained insight into the secret of Alex and Ani’s meteoric rise by CEO Giovanni Feroce, a “West Warwick kid” who has made good as leader of the nationally recognized lifestyle brand. His keynote speech emphasized setting excellence as a corporate goal and then making sure that all aspects of an enterprise are driven by reaching it.
More than 60 applicants competed for the nine winners’ trophies, which came with a congratulatory proclamation from U.S. Rep. James R. Langevin.
The 2013 Business Excellence Awards competition was presented by Bank Rhode Island, and was produced in partnership with Bryant University, Cox Business, Davitt Design Build Inc., LGC&D P.C., Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP, Tufts Health Plan and Gencorp Insurance Group. The media sponsor was AM790 Talk Business.
