R.I. colleges plug into startup mentality

Even as the Ocean State’s elected leaders seem to be working at cross purposes, the state’s higher educational institutions are doing their part to help jump-start the local economy. The tool: entrepreneurship.

Academic leaders in the region understand that one of the most effective economic-development strategies is to unleash the creative force of new ideas, and many of their schools have designed formal and informal programs to do just that.

From Bryant University’s Global Entrepreneurship Program to Brown University’s master’s degree in innovation management and entrepreneurship, Johnson & Wales University’s Larry Friedman International Center Of Entrepreneurship and others, students are being taught in the classroom and through practical experience how to recognize a “commercializeable opportunity.”

And once the student sees the potential in an idea, they are learning how to bring it to market. In an age of extended high unemployment, knowing how to start your own business is an empowering skill set. And one that Rhode Island needs as much of as we can get. •
