R.I. entrepreneur purchases Mass. water-treatment company

SUTTON, Mass. – East Greenwich entrepreneur and manufacturing industry veteran Barry Golden has purchased Gurney Engineering Corp., a 59-year-old commercial water-treatment company headquartered in Massachusetts, for an undisclosed sum.

Gurney Engineering currently provides industrial and commercial water-treatment services for boilers, HVAC systems, and process cooling and heating systems to more than 400 customers and 1,500 facilities across New England.

Ross Weaver, who has led Gurney Engineering as president and technical director for 38 years, will remain with the company for the next several years to work with Golden through the transition. All of the company’s current employees will stay with the organization, according to a Tuesday release.

“[Golden] is an entrepreneur with a track record for creating value in companies through business growth, process re-engineering, new product development and business development,” said Weaver. “I am confident that with Barry’s leadership, Gurney Engineering will continue to innovate and maintain our commitment to customer service.”

Prior to purchasing Gurney Engineering, Golden served for 18 years as president and CEO of Scott Brass Inc., a privately held brass and copper strip manufacturing company based in Cranston, before overseeing the sale of Scott Brass to Sun Capital Partners in 2007.

Asked why he chose to purchase Gurney Engineering, Golden said, “The company has strong track record, a good client base, and a highly skilled and experienced workforce. I am excited to work with Ross to grow and build on the expertise and talents of Gurney Engineering.”
