NEW YORK – Two Rhode Island hotels – The Attwater in Newport and Westerly’s Weekapaug Inn – earned spots on Conde Nast Traveler’s 17th annual May Hot List, which touts itself as “the ultimate insider’s guide to the hottest new hotels and spas of the year.”
To compile this year’s list, editors anonymously traveled to 57 countries to visit 201 new hotels and evaluated each on a standard set of criteria including: service, food, atmosphere and amenities.
The 2013 list includes a record 154 new hotels and resorts and 35 new spas. Of the 154 hotels on the list, only 16 are from the U.S. Furthermore, only five of the 35 new spas were within the U.S.
The Attwater is a former beer hall that has been converted into a 12-room bed and breakfast. The Conde Nast editors described the inn as “boldly colorful yet classically New England.”
The recently renovated, 27-room Weekapaug Inn was described as: “Traditional WASP New England luxed up with $20 million of modern comforts and as much aesthetic updating as the guardians of the National Register allow,” by the editors of Conde Nast Traveler, who complemented the hotel’s views and nature walks.
Other U.S. hotels that made this year’s list include:
