R.I. joins regional distance learning

BOSTON – Rhode Island was recently approved by the New England Board of Higher Education to join the New England State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement.

Rhode Island becomes the 36th state nationally to join SARA and the fourth in New England, along with New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, according to a release from the New England Board of Higher Education.

SARA is an initiative that aims to make distance-education courses more accessible to students across state lines and make it easier for states to regulate and institutions to participate in interstate distance education.

Accredited Rhode Island degree-granting institutions that offer distance-education courses can seek approval from their RI-SARA to participate in the New England SARA. The R.I. Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner will begin accepting applications in January. •
