PROVIDENCE – In a bid to recruit top health care talent to Rhode Island’s medically under-served communities, the R.I. Department of Health has partnered with five local nonprofits to help fund its Rhode Island Health Professional Loan Repayment Program.

The program rewards primary care, dentistry and mental health professionals with education loan repayment assistance in exchange for a two-year commitment to practice in medically under-served communities in Rhode Island, as identified through the Health Professional Shortage Area process.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, The Rhode Island Foundation, the Rhode Island Health Center Association and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan each contributed $25,000 to the fund.

Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and the Department of Health announced eight new recipients of the program at the Statehouse Tuesday, representing several health care organizations around the state. Awards are distributed to eligible health professionals by the Health Professional Loan Repayment Board in hopes to recruit and retain talented healthcare professionals in the state.
