R.I. one of top 20 ‘booziest’ states

PROVIDENCE – The Ocean State is one the top 20 “booziest” states, according to a survey by Thrillist.
Thrillist, with the help of a Movoto.com researcher, tabulated data including per-capita craft breweries and last-call hours to come up with the list.
Having one bar for every 3,982 residents put Rhode Island at No. 18.
Thrillist said this about the Ocean State: “Not only does Rhode Island have an impressive ratio of places for people to drink vs. people to drink in places – when they’re in those places, the average Ocean Stater mauls through hooch to the tune of 2.72 gallons annually.”
A few other New England states cracked the top 20 – Vermont at No. 5 for its abundance of craft breweries – 6.2 craft breweries per 100,000 residents; Maine at No. 10 for 4.7 craft breweries per 100,000 residents, and New Hampshire at No. 19 for 4.65 gallons of alcohol consumed per capita.
Massachusetts was ranked No. 22.
“The Commonwealth didn’t put up any stellar numbers, but it drank its way into a solid result in pretty much every category,” the survey said.
Connecticut was No. 33 for its “decent wineries” and “$373,592,000 economic impact of craft beer.”
“Despite all the data-collecting and number-crunching, the fact remains that ‘booziness’ is barely even a word, much less a quantifiable mathematical concept. We knew that going into this project, and we know it coming out. But even if you don’t agree with the individual ranking of your state, or have qualms with a specific data column, we hope this piece gave you a deeper appreciation for the sheer diversity of American drinking culture. Cheers, folks,” Thrillist concluded.
