R.I. press fetes excellence, inducts hall of fame members

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Providence Journal and Rhode Island Monthly garnered the most winners in the Rhode Island Press Association’s annual editorial contest, which were presented Friday evening as part of the association’s annual banquet and Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame induction ceremony, held at the Quonset “O” Club.
The Journal won first place in 17 categories for the competition, based on work published in 2012, including for its coverage of the general election last year as well as for coverage of Hurricane Sandy, front page design and investigative or analytical news story or series.

Rhode Island Monthly received first place awards in nine categories, including in-depth feature story and special section.

In all, eight publications won first place recognition in the contest, which was judged by members of the Idaho Press Association.

Providence Business News received second place for its staff coverage of Hurricane Sandy, along with third place in the investigative or analytical news story or series for Patrick Anderson’s collection of stories about the after-effects of the collapse of 38 Studios LLC. PBN also received honorable mention for Patrick Anderson’s analysis of the investing philosophy and results for the Slater Technology Fund as well as for headline writing.

Inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame were: former Providence Journal columnist and feature writer Martha Smith, former Newport Daily News sports writer and columnist Rick McGowan and long-time business editor of The Journal, Joseph L. Goodrich. Plaques for all three inductees, as well as all past inductees, are displayed at the University of Rhode Island’s journalism department offices in South Kingstown.

The organization also re-elected its leadership team at the event, confirming for another year the president, Mark S. Murphy, editor of Providence Business News; the vice president, Paul Spetrini, freelance photographer; Treasurer Nancy Kirsch, editor of The Jewish Voice & Herald; and Secretary Linda Lotridge Levin, former Providence Journal staffer and long-time head of the University of Rhode Island’s journalism department.
