PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Labor and Training has received a $500,000 grant from the federal government to support Hurricane Sandy-related cleanup efforts in the Ocean State, announced Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee.

The National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor will permit the state to boost the number of staffers working in the cleanup and recovery programs from 75 to 100, according to the release.

The initiatives are specifically intended to provide employment opportunities for groups including unemployed veterans, the long-term unemployed and people dislocated due to Hurricane Sandy.

A $500,000 initial emergency grant was approved in November, and the incremental funding announced Monday will bring the total of National Emergency Grant funding for Rhode Island’s Sandy clean-up to $1 million.

Through the cleanup program, the DLT and R.I. Department of Environmental Management have already begun work on a number of state beaches, parks and campgrounds in Rhode Island’s four coastal counties.

The new federal funding will allow Rhode Island to complete those efforts and expand their program to include Brenton Point State Park and Fort Adams State Park.
