R.I. small business award winners recognized

PROVIDENCE – The U.S. Small Business Administration announced the 2016 Rhode Island small business award winners this week.
The SBA recognized nine small business award winners in a range of categories. Just last week, it was announced that Thomas Parsons Kellogg III, president of ParsonsKellogg LLC, was named the 2016 Rhode Island Small Business Person of the Year.

Kellogg will represent Rhode Island when he competes for the National Small Business Person of the Year Award during the National Small Business Week celebration in Washington, D.C., during the week of May 2-6. He will compete against winners from each of the 68 other district offices, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The other Rhode Island small business award winners are:

  • Rhode Island and New England microenterprise: Linda Bohmbach, vice president of sales and marketing, Home Healthsmith LLC, Portsmouth
  • Woman-owned small business: Patricia Steere, president/CEO, Steere Engineering Inc., Warwick
  • Minority-owned small business: Henry Osorio and Maria Ochoa, owners, Great Shipping and Postal, Central Falls
  • Young entrepreneur: Eliana Parada, owner, Las Delicias Bakery, Providence
  • Home-based small business: Jane McHenry, owner, A Day at the Beach, Tiverton
  • Financial services champion: Holly Ferrara, vice president, commercial lending, Greenwood Credit Union, Warwick
  • Joseph G.E. Knight award for entrepreneurial excellence: David Levesque, owner, Brewed Awakenings, multiple locations
  • Rhode Island district director award: Melissa Travis, business sales lead, HealthSource RI

“I would like to congratulate all of our award winners,” Mark S. Hayward, district director of the SBA’s Rhode Island District Office, said in a statement. “There were numerous strong entries in all of the categories, and these businesses really stood out. It is a testament to their hard work, and all the winners are great examples of the outstanding small businesses we have in the state.”

Winners will be honored during the Rhode Island Salute to Small Business Awards Luncheon on May 5 at Alpine Country Club in Cranston. Tickets may be purchased for $40 per person and sponsorship opportunities are available.
