R.I. student places 4th in investment competition

EAST GREENWICH – An East Greenwich sophomore last week was recognized for winning fourth place in a national competition that asked students to analyze a hypothetical investments scenario and recommend portfolio action.
Jackson Cronin, a 10th grader at East Greenwich High School, won the recognition participating in the SIFMA Foundation’s InvestWrite essay competition with McGraw Hill Financial. The competition asks students to analyze and recommend portfolio allocations for short- and long-term financial goals.
“When choosing a stock to invest in, you need to consider multiple factors, including your risk tolerance and the market capitalization of a company that aligns with your investment philosophy,” Cronin wrote in his winning essay.
Cronin identified Lockheed Martin as a wise long-term investment.
“Lockheed Martin has utilized the capital markets to generate money to fund research and development and corporate expansion. Approximately one year ago, thanks to capital markets, Lockheed Martin was able to launch Lockheed Martin International,” Cronin wrote.
Cronin is among 20,000 students nationwide to take the challenge and he and his teacher Patricia Page – who was named Rhode Island Teach of the Year in 2014 – were recognized last week at a school event held with a slew of local and state lawmakers.
Douglas L. Peterson, president and CEO of McGraw Hill Financial, in a statement highlighted the need for financial education at a young age.
“Teaching students a very young age the basics of finance and the stock market is essential to their broad education and to being well-informed investors later in life,” Peterson said. “As financial markets become more complex and more global, investors of all ages can benefit from learning how to save, spend and earn money wisely – what we call ‘financial essentials.’ ”
