PROVIDENCE – A number of tax changes went into effect this month, including the gasoline tax increasing by 1 cent to 33 cents per gallon.
The R.I. Department of Revenue Division of Taxation announced a slew of tax changes effective July 1.
“These changes are the result of legislation that was approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Gina M. Raimondo,” said David M. Sullivan, acting Department of Revenue director. “Many of the changes were originally proposed by governor Raimondo in her fiscal 2016 budget and are designed to help existing business grow, attract new businesses in Rhode Island and create jobs.”
The increased gasoline tax is due to an inflation-indexed formula that was enacted in legislation in June 2014. The mandatory inflation applies only to the 32-cent Rhode Island excise tax, according to a division press release. It also applies to diesel and other taxable motor fuels that meet the definition of “fuels” under Rhode Island law.
Other tax changes include exemptions from the 7 percent sales and use tax for heating fuels sales; electricity and gas sales; and wine and spirits sales in Rhode Island, according to the list.
A full list of the changes can be found at the division’s website here.
