PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Convention Center will host the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships next June, and the economic impact for the event is estimated at $3.75 million.

The economic impact figure was included in a press release from the R.I. Sports Commission about the event.
The event will showcase more than 1,800 of the country’s best gymnasts, USA Gymnastics announced.
The Junior Olympic competition will take place June 8 to 13 of next year at the convention center, with the junior and senior elite competition taking place at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center June 10 to 12.
The USA Gymnastics Championships will be part of the Olympic Games selection for rhythmic gymnastics and/or trampoline if the U.S. qualifies for the 2016 Olympic Games for these two disciplines.
“USA Gymnastics is excited to bring one of our premier events to Providence and the state of Rhode Island,” Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said in a statement.
Local partners for the event are the R.I. Convention Center Authority and the R.I. Sports Commission.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to have been selected to host the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships at our two facilities,” James McCarvill, executive director of the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, said. “Our team has worked very hard in preparing the bid for this world-class event and we look forward to showcasing our facilities and the city of Providence to a national audience.”
The event schedule will be available this fall, and tickets will go on sale in 2016. For information on the USA Gymnastics Championships, visit http://www.usagymchamps.com.
