PROVIDENCE – The state Department of Transportation will receive an additional $2.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for cleanup cost reimbursement from a late January snowstorm.

The federal money was announced this week by the state’s congressional delegation, who said that they worked to ensure Rhode Island qualified for federal disaster assistance and received the maximum amount of eligible funding.

On April 3, President Obama granted Gov. Gina M. Raimondo’s request for a major disaster declaration due to the severe winter snowstorm Jan. 26-28.
The state also received $4 million in federal Public Assistance funding previously, and with the latest amount, the total is nearly $6.4 million, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed’s office.
“I am pleased FEMA is reimbursing the state for significant costs related to last year’s snow and ice removal. Last year’s snowfall exacted a heavy price on state and local budgets. This funding should help offset some of the costs for cities and towns as they make repairs and get prepared for the coming winter,” Reed said in a statement.

Said U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, “As Rhode Islanders remember all too clearly, severe storms clobbered the Ocean State last winter. That snow and ice cost the state millions in cleanup and repairs to damaged infrastructure. I’m glad to see this federal funding coming to the DOT to help us recover from the serious financial strain those storms caused.”
FEMA will reimburse Rhode Island for 75 percent of all eligible costs incurred between Jan. 26 and 28. All the counties throughout the state are eligible, the release said.
