PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s congressional delegation announced Friday that the state would receive about $6.8 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The state will receive about $3.5 million in State Homeland Security Program funding, which is used to better equip and train emergency responders, and about $3.15 million in Emergency Management Performance Grants, which helps state and local governments develop emergency management and preparedness strategies.

The state also will receive about $178,000 in Port Security Grant funding, which pays for transportation infrastructure security. Those funds will be split between the Providence and Cranston fire departments, the R.I. State Police, the Sprague Energy Providence Terminal and the Rhode Island Fast Ferry.

“The Boston [Marathon] bombings were a stark reminder that we need well-trained first responders and a well-coordinated emergency response,” said U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, and U.S. Reps. James R. Langevin and David N. Cicilline in a joint statement.
