RIAC, Warwick agree on runway expansion

Posted 3/1/12

WARWICK – The Rhode Island Airport Corporation Board of Directors Thursday approved an agreement with the Warwick City Council to resolve the city’s legal challenge of T.F. Green Airport runway expansion plans.

The agreement, approved by the City Council Wednesday night, spells out which Warwick homes affected by the expanded runway will be purchased by the airport and which will be offered sound-proofing insulation.

It also sets timelines for when the properties must be acquired, a concern of many in the city who have been impacted by uncertainty and delays with earlier airport expansion mitigation plans.

Under the agreement, the Airport Corporation also agrees to replace the Winslow Park ball fields displaced by the runway with new fields at the Community College of Rhode Island or an alternative location if that one proves unsuitable.

The agreement also outlines rules for the relocation of disrupted cemeteries and airport water quality testing of the surrounding neighborhood. The airport also agrees to install Warwick signs and promotional materials in T.F. Green.

The memorandum approved by both RIAC and the city council is to be formalized in an official settlement before the city dismisses its appeal of federal approval of the airport expansion.
