PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College and the National Grid Foundation, the philanthropic arm of National Grid, have established a scholarship program to help students pursue “green” careers.

The GreenDependence Scholars Program will provide a $10,000 scholarship to a student of color at RIC to help the student learn about the benefits and importance of sustainable practices.

“Rhode Island College is a natural choice to establish the GreenDependence Scholars Program,” National Grid Foundation President Bob Keller said in prepared remarks. “RIC is not only one of the country’s finest academic institutions, they are leaders in the campus sustainability movement and personify the principles of GreenDependence.”

RIC is one of five colleges across the country selected to serve as pilot institutions for the GreenDependence program, which is designed to “help a student achieve his or her career aspirations as well as take personal action in the area of sustainability on campus, at home and eventually in their professional careers,” according to a release from the college.

“Rhode Island College is excited to be part of the green movement and educate students for a sustainable future,” Ron Pitt, RIC vice president for academic affairs, said in a statement. “We are grateful for the funding from the National Grid Foundation and look forward to supporting a RIC student who is pursuing a career in sustainability.”
