RIC forum to tackle R.I.’s solid-waste management practices

RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE will host its 2013 Green Business Forum on Thursday, focusing on the state's solid-waste management plan and best business practices for local businesses and their employees to improve recycling and composting in the workplace.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College will hold its fall 2013 Green Business Forum on Thursday, Nov. 14, the school announced Tuesday.

The forum, titled “Rhode Island Solid-Waste Management Plan: Why Care About Trash?” will feature Michael O’Connell, executive director of R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation, and Sarah Kite, director of recycling services for RIRRC, the company responsible for operating the Central Landfill in Johnston.

RIC Sustainability Coordinator Jim Murphy said the forum will provide critical information for businesses and their employees on how to improve recycling and composting in the workplace, and will also address what the state plans to do when the Central Landfill becomes full.

“Businesses spend an enormous amount of money each year disposing of trash and recyclables,” said Murphy. “More and more businesses are hiring sustainability coordinators or directors. They are buying into sustainability practices and this gives them a way to see the return on their investment.”

RIC launched its Green Business Forum series last spring to provide conversations about the link between sustainability efforts and business best practices.

The forum, free and open to the public, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 in RIC’s Alger Hall. For more information, contact Jim Murphy at (401) 456-8799 or by email at jmurphy2@ric.edu.
