PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College has joined the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, an international organization that emphasizes community engagement, the college announced Wednesday.

Founded in 1990, the coalition comprises urban higher education institutions that are committed to improving educational outcomes and stimulating economic development in their communities. It connects leaders from various universities and colleges to share best practices and different resources by strengthening professional relationships.

The move makes RIC the only Rhode Island coalition member, though there are others — including the University of Massachusetts Boston and Connecticut’s University of New Haven — in the New England region.

One of RIC’s major community initiatives is improving local K-12 education and boosting the educational levels of Providence’s workforce, Christopher Hourigan, director of institutional research and planning at RIC, said in a statement. The college has also taken steps to improve Rhode Island’s business climate through its leaders’ participation in various economic development organization.

“Being a member of an organization like CUMU defines the kind of institution we are,” Hourigan said. “The college strives to be a vital economic, cultural and social resource for the state.”
