PROVIDENCE – In an effort to improve students’ opportunities entering the job market as well as to cultivate future state leaders, Rhode Island College is launching a state-focused education and job training initiative.

The program will be led by RIC School of Management Professor Lawrence Wilson who will act as the new interim executive director of economic and leadership development.

“Rhode Island College is uniquely positioned to have a dramatic impact on the state’s future,” said President Nancy Carriuolo in prepared remarks. “Most of our students come from Rhode Island, and they choose to live and work here after they graduate.”

The initiative will work to make Rhode Island-based internships, professional training and mentoring opportunities more available to students by collaborating with local businesses and community leaders.

Wilson will work with the RIC School of Management and the Office of Professional Studies and Continuing Education to launch courses tailored to provide education and training necessary for “the workforce of the future,” according to a press release.

“I am delighted to serve in this new capacity and am convinced that through a wide array of partnerships, we will strengthen the fabric and leadership of the given institution, while developing the future leaders for Rhode Island from among the ranks of our dynamic student body,” Wilson said in a statement.

Wilson graduated from the Wharton School with an MBA and has “extensive experience in corporate, entrepreneurial and non-profit management positions,” according to RIC.
