RIC launches nursing care management program

PROVIDENCE – Citing a need for better trained managers to coordinate patient care in a variety of settings, the Rhode Island College School of Nursing said it had created a Graduate Certificate Program in Nursing Care Management.

“This program will be the first of its kind and meet a critical need in Rhode Island’s health care landscape,” RIC President Nancy Carriuolo said, adding that the program will support the “needs of Rhode Island’s economy.”

Nurse care managers provide patient assessment, treatment planning, health care facilitation and advocacy in both private practice settings and hospitals.

The college said it developed the new course offerings after working with nursing care managers from the Rhode Island Chronic Care Sustainability Initiative, which supports the patient-centered medical home model of primary care.

The 15-credit program will consist of five courses, including a new one focusing specifically on care management that was developed by RIC Associate Professor of Nursing Jeanne Schwager.

“Patient-centered medical homes need nurses to take on care coordinator roles, and nurses need graduate-level education to acquire the skill sets and knowledge required for those positions,” Schwager said.
The school said the coursework will emphasize evidence-based approaches to health care service coordination that are designed to improve quality of care and help contain costs.
