RIC project opening North Burial Ground to online tours

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island College North Burial Ground Project, in partnership with several nonprofit organizations and government agencies, is building online tours of Providence’s North Burial Ground to make the property more of an education and economic asset for the city.
The North Ground Burial Project is developing a series of virtual tours for the historic cemetery to provide opportunities for RIC students, faculty and the public to use the cemetery for experiential education.
The online tours are under construction and will include biographies of those buried in North Burial Ground, along with audio tours. Future plans for the project include developing a mobile app and the establishment of a Friends of North Burial Ground nonprofit organization.
North Burial Ground dates to 1700. Those buried there include Horace Mann, Moses Brown, Annie Smith Peck (a Rhode Island College alumna and American mountaineer), and Sarah Helen Whitman (a poet, essayist and romantic interest of Edgar Allen Poe).
The project is funded in part by Rhode Island Council for the Humanities major grant award to Leazes. The college provided initial funding through a faculty research grant. •
