RIC simulation center gets accreditation

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College Simulation Center and Nursing Resource Laboratory recently received accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

The RIC center becomes only the second accredited simulation center in New England. The other center is at Yale.

Simulation labs are used to create clinical situations that nursing students must deal with in real time. In the place of patients, lifelike mannequins with pulses, respiration and bowel sounds present nursing students with a variety of challenges. Some of the mannequins can respond to light and sound.

RIC’s simulation center includes two high-tech rooms with embedded cameras that allow for playback in a debriefing room. There is also a pediatric lab with baby, toddler and child mannequins. Much of the equipment was paid for with a grant from the Health Resources and Services Association.
