PROVIDENCE – The RI STEM Center at Rhode Island College will host its annual conference on Friday, May 30, with this year’s theme focusing on how to begin developing a statewide strategy to advance science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as the art and design industries in Rhode Island.

The conference, “Creating Rhode Island’s Future: Building Capacity for STE[A]M,” will include a keynote address by Margaret Honey, president and CEO of the New York Hall of Science, who recently served as chair of the National Research Council’s committee that produced the 2014 report, “STEM Integration in K-12 Education: Status, Prospects and an Agenda for Research.”

In addition, conference attendees will participate in breakout sessions addressing the key challenges of how to engage students in the STEM and art and design fields, how to take advantage of STE[A]M skills to improve career readiness and how to connect statewide sectors to build support for STE[A]M in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association will also sponsor a session on implementing computer science education in Rhode Island public schools.

“There is a need for education, industry and government to work together to move STE[A]M forward in Rhode Island,” said Carol Giuriceo, director of the RI STEM Center. “We agree on where we want to be, but we need to answer the question: How do we get there?”

The conference seeks to establish a long-term vision for a STE[A]M council, according to a RIC release announcing the event.

The 2014 conference will be held on Friday, May 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in RIC’s Alger Hall. For more information, visit www.ric.edu/steamconference. To register for the conference, click here.
