RIC to relocate career center

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College will relocate and upgrade its Career Development Center by early 2016 to enhance the interaction between students and potential employers.
According to Jenifer R. Giroux, the college’s associate vice president of professional studies and continuing education, the center now located in Craig Lee Hall, which is scheduled for major renovations in the next year or two, will be moved to Roberts Hall, where the office of RIC President Nancy Carriuolo and continuing education offices are already located, in time for the 2016 spring semester.
The objective is for employers to “interact more naturally” with RIC students and alumni, said Giroux.
“President Carriuolo wanted to make the relocation a priority here to make sure business people can spend time on campus,” Giroux said. “There also will be a stronger connection between our office and alumni for alums looking to change careers.”
“This change really brings together current students, recent graduates experienced, successful alumni and the business community, all to make sure we’re serving Rhode Island workforce needs as best as we possibly can,” Carriuolo added.
Now, students and businesses interact mostly through the posting of job opportunities and internships, but in the new space, potential employers will be able to come in and work with students face to face, Giroux said.
The new space in Roberts Hall will also have improved technology resources, such as new computers stations for students as well as smart TVs, smart boards and projectors for workshops and events.
Ground-breaking for the relocation will occur sometime during the upcoming fall semester, with most of the work being done between the fall break and the end of the semester. The center could be operational by the end of January, in time for the start of the spring semester, Giroux said.
The cost of the project was not immediately available.
