PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced it has initiated the process of collecting qualifications from firms who want to bid on the massive redesign and construction of the 6-10 Connector.

Nine bridges ultimately will be pared to seven in the project, with enhancements for bicycle and pedestrian access. The project is estimated to cost $400 million. The state will be tapping funds secured through RhodeWorks, which will apply tolls for the first time on tractor-trailer trucks and other large trucks using state highways.

The Request for Qualifications, initiated this week, will solicit information from companies that want to submit bids. The project will incorporate the new design for the system of roads and bridges that was unveiled in early December by Gov. Gina M. Raimondo and Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza, according to a news release.

Among other things, the new design will create a connection for the first time from Route 10 North to Route 6 West, add 1.4 miles of new pedestrian and bike paths, including in two places that will cross the Amtrak tracks, and demolish about half the length of the existing Huntington Viaduct. Surface roads will be installed in its place to maintain traffic flow.
RIDOT anticipates an award of a contract with construction to begin in the fall.
