WASHINGTON – The R.I. Department of Transportation will receive $15 million in federal disaster assistance to help repair roads and infrastructure damaged as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
“These federal funds will help RIDOT make necessary repairs and rebuild roads that were damaged by Sandy,” U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Reps. James R. Langevin and David N. Cicilline said in a joint statement announcing the award.
In January, President Barack Obama signed the Superstorm Sandy Supplemental Appropriations bill into law, bringing the total Sandy aid to $60.4 billion. According to a release, the funding package included federal aid to help homeowners, businesses and communities as well as to help rebuild coastal, transportation and clean water infrastructure.
The release pointed to the latest Federal Emergency Management Agency statistics, which said that Rhode Islanders submitted more than 1,000 claims of storm damage related to Sandy. Thus far, FEMA has paid out more than $14.9 million.
According to the release, 40 percent of all flood claims in Rhode Island have been closed, though FEMA has extended the deadline for Rhode Islanders with losses from Sandy to register for federal assistance until Wednesday, Feb. 13.
