BRISTOL – The R.I. Emergency Management Agency and the town of Bristol will host a joint press conference on Wednesday to announce the implementation of CodeRED, an emergency notification system designed to deliver critical communications to the state’s residents.

The event will be held at the Bristol Fire Department at 2:30 p.m.
The CodeRED emergency alert system utilizes a mapping capability allowing for the geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a high speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized pre-recorded emergency messages directly to a recipient whose phone number is registered within CodeRED’s database. The database supports sending message notifications to landline and mobile phones, as well as text messages and emails. The service is free to the public, however text message fees by wireless carriers may apply.
“This emergency notification system enables the state of Rhode Island to quickly provide essential information to the public in a variety of situations, such as evacuation notices, severe weather alerts, boil water notices and missing children,” RIEMA Director Peter Gaynor said in a statement. “The CodeRED system will provide us with the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire state, depending on the severity and extent of an emergency or disaster.”
The CodeRED system can also be used to support municipalities in the state to quickly notify and update residents in the event of an emergency.
Bristol will be using the CodeRED system to support its Fourth of July parade, sending out important parade-related notifications to all registered users within the vicinity of the parade area.
To receive free emergency notifications from CodeRED, visit www.riema.ri.gov. Note that if you have already registered for CodeRED through your community, additional registration is not required.
