PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation is “blown away” by the response to its recently launched Innovation Fellowship.

The philanthropic organization said it had received more than 430 letters of intent for the fellowship by the Dec. 23 deadline.

There was a range of interest topics, including: energy, food, economic development, technology, teaching, government and others.

“And it wasn’t just the number of applications that amazed us; it also was the generous and can-do spirit with which people responded to this opportunity. We are grateful to Letitia and John Carter for making this program possible, to members of our selection panel, and to those who helped spread the word. We have never been more optimistic for Rhode Island’s future,” the foundation said in a news release Thursday.

The selection panel will pick two fellows to receive up to $300,000 over three years in April. The fellowship focuses on “the greatest good for the greatest number,” and expects risk-taking – “We expect failures, or at least non-conclusive results after three years for some fellows,” it added.
