SMITHFIELD – The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council will host a public forum on higher education featuring review panels of educators, analysts and policymakers both from within Rhode Island and representing national organizations.

The three-hour forum, sponsored by Fidelity Investments, will be held Friday, Jan. 10, and focus on how the state’s higher education system compares nationally, whether the system’s current funding structure is sustainable, and what the future of higher education will look like both in the Ocean State and on the national level.

The national review panelists include Julian L. Alssid, senior workforce strategist at College for America; Lara Couturier, program director of postsecondary state policy at Jobs for the Future; Sarah Flanagan, vice president of government relations and policy at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; and Carlos Santiago, senior deputy commissioner for academic affairs at the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.

Sitting on the local review panel will be Dan Egan, executive director of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Rhode Island; Sister Jane Gerety, president of Salve Regina University; Clark Greene of the R.I. Office of Higher Education; and Eva-Marie Mancuso, chairwoman of the R.I. Board of Education.

RIPEC Executive Director John C. Simmons and Fidelity Investments Vice President of Public Affairs John Muggeridge will moderate the forum, and a question and answer period will follow each panel.

The event is open to the public and will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Jan. 10 at the Fidelity Investments building at 900 Salem St. in Smithfield. Attendees may pre-register by emailing m_paredes@ripec.com to reserve a name badge for the event, but pre-registration is not required to attend.
