RIPR: Buyouts to be offered at ProJo

PROVIDENCE – GateHouse Media, owner of The Providence Journal, is offering buyouts to non-union and union employees, Rhode Island Public Radio reported.

“They tell us they don’t have a number that they’re looking at,” John Hill, a Providence Journal reporter and Providence Newspaper Guild president, told the radio station.

GateHouse acquired the Journal in September; 22 union members were laid off in the transition, as well as an unidentified number of non-union workers.

RIPR reported that the Guild is also seeking its first contract with GateHouse since being acquired by the company. Back in February, Hill told Providence Business News that the Guild had been told that four additional reporters would be hired; at least two of those hires have been made.

The paper has had repeated rounds of buyouts and layoffs in recent years.
